This years event promises to showcase a higher caliber of films than previous showcases. Over the past few years the Little Hollywood Shootout has become a popular venue for young film students and independent film makers to hone their skills and try out new ideas. As the pool of talented film makers grows the films produced are also increasing in quality. Additionally, this years event was much more flexible with the time constraints put onto the film makers. Unlike the 48hour limit of previous years, this years participants had several weeks to edit and polish the footage they obtained in Kane County.

We look forward to see the level of creativity and production quality this year and invite you all to come and witness the results as they are announced.

 Welcome to the 3rd annual “Little Hollywood Shootout” quick turnaround filming challenge. Your task is to make a short film utilizing Kane County’s unique resources. Kane County is home to famed film productions like “Planet of the Apes,” “The Outlaw Josey Wales,” and Disney’s “John Carter of Mars.”

 For the next several week’s however, this is your cinematic playground. We wish you success and safety with this endeavor and just need to lay down some ground rules before you can get to work.

 THEME: Kane County, where “Anything’s Possible!”

 LOCATIONS: Shooting can take place anywhere in Kane County but teams are required to use TWO of the location options in their project found in the accompanied location list. Editing can take place anywhere.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. Deadline: Films must be turned in no later than Midnight April 3.

2. Submission: Your finished film needs to be uploaded to Dropbox and shared to stowell@dixie.edu. If you have issues or questions with Dropbox talk to Kelly Stowell, 435-899-0443.

3. Format: Films can be shot in any format but it is highly recommended to submit in a quicktime movie file in Dropbox for programming purposes.

4. Label: Film files must be labeled with title, theme, director’s name, and phone number. Films must be no more than five minutes.

5. Discretion: Please exercise discretion in terms of content because your films will be public and screened to family friendly audiences including a community viewing of accepted shootout films where kids will be present. (e.g. no bad language, excessive violence, adult themes, etc.)

6. Locations: Films must utilize the provided theme and locations. There are ten location options and TWO of these locations are required in your film. Please see the attached information for full list of locations and other details. Accompanying the rules and registration is also contact information for each of these locations and you must contact these people for each of the sites you choose.

Note: The more locations you use doesn’t give you an advantage.

2. Resources: Please see provided list of resources in the accompanying relocation guide. Detailed maps are also available. You are encouraged to get local businesses and residents involved with your film. This will help you make a better film and you will have more people show up at the community screening. Idea: Make a commercial for a local business or reenact historical event with characters from Kane County.

3. Waiver: Each team must fill out a wavier and entry form. The entry fee must also be paid before you head out to make your film.

4. Fee: You may sign up in 1 of 2 categories; Advanced ($30) or Beginner ($15). The size of the cash prize is dependent upon which category you sign up for. The choice is yours.

5. Film Posting: Do not post your films online until after the community screening.

6. Community Screening: “The Little Hollywood Shootout” entries will be screened in Kanab on the evening of Friday, April 12. Following the screenings, cash awards and trophies will be given out including an Audience Choice Award, so be sure to invite everyone you know to the event. Attendance is not a requirement but is encouraged.

Please read this Rules and Regulations sheet carefully, breaking of any rules will result in a disqualification of your film.

JUDGING PROCESS

Entries will be reviewed by film enthusiasts located both within Kane County and outside the region to ensure a fair selection process. The reviewers come from many diverse backgrounds and contain professionals working in the industry, and outside the industry.

The judging criteria contains three categories:

1) Artistic Merit: (e.g., Story, Creativity, Entertainment Value, Community Value)

Note: This category carries the most weight in the review process.

 2) Technical Merit: (e.g. Photography, narration, editing, music)

Note: Because access to high-quality production equipment might be a challenge for some, this criteria is weighted less than the others.

3) Adherence to the Assignment: (e.g. Theme, two locations utilized, etc.)

The shootout is upon us and teams are signing up. For all teams who are participating in this years Little Hollywood Shootout, you will need to download, fill out and return the shootout waiver. This form acknowledges that you and your team are responsible for your own safety. And while CEBIA and the Little Hollywood Shootout have done everything within reason to provide a safe and fulfilling experience, “we” cannot be held responsible for damages to persons or property as a result of your participation and that you take responsibility for yourself, team, equipment and your presence on public and private property.

To be eligible to participate in the 2013 Little Hollywood Shootout you must download, fill out and return the waiver on behalf of your team. Teams who have not filled out and returned the waiver are not considered registered for, nor are participating in the 2013 Little Hollywood Shootout.

The form can be downloaded here, filled out and emailed directly to stowell@dixie.edu or it may be returned in person at the Kane County Tourism Information Center in Kanab on the first day of filming. Copies of the form will be available there as well.

Film making in general is a hands on experience that comes with potential hazards if  you are not prepared. To minimize those hazards and to help ensure a positive experience, be sure to be prepared. Below are a couple things to keep in mind while filming in Kane County.

1. Stay hydrated. You will be in the desert. Be sure to bring along plenty of water and snacks to keep up your energy and keep you bodies in top working condition.

2. Some locations are treacherous. Stay away from cliffs and look for snakes. You are in the wild, take care that you are always aware of your environment. Remember Safety first.

3. Don’t overdo it. In a competition is is easy to forget the body only has so much to give. Know what is too heavy, to far or too extreme for your body to handle.

4. Accidents happen. Be sure to have a first aid kit with you. No one wants you to need it, but have it anyway.

5. Bring a Shovel. There are many places in Kane county to find yourself stranded by driving on unstable sandy roads. Stay out of the sand. Unless you’re vehicle is equipped for travel on sand roads, stay away. You are here to make great films, not to walk back to town.

6. Be prepared. Know where you are by following maps and staying close to the main roads. Keep a list of emergency phone numbers. Check fuel, oil, air pressure, spare tire… on your vehicle to be sure you’ll make it where you’re going.

Now get out there, experience all the majestic beauty of Kane County, make epic films and most of all, have a great time. We are always grateful for the generous support given by the local media, merchants and businesses of Kanab in helping us get the word out and taking care of our attendees when you all come in for the event. While in Kanab, pop into the many places of business and let them know your here to make a movie. You might just impress someone.

There are a couple of things to note in this years event. It is no longer a 49.5 hour competition. In order to give filmmakers a chance to create the best film possible, the time has been extended. Now, each teams energy, while in Kane County, can now be spent with more focus on production. It’s our hope to provide participants greater opportunity to capture the awe inspiring scenery and landscapes found in Kane County. Additionally, editing time has been extended to allow film makers a chance to do what they do best. Make great films.

Participants must be present on March 13, to enter the contest and most of the filming must take place in Kane County at revealed locations. Editing and post production can take place in the participants desired location. Film submission deadlines are due on April 3, and can be submitted either in person or online.

There will be a public screening of all the submitted films and following the film screenings the winners in each categories will be announced. All participants are strongly encouraged to attend the screening.
